New logistic centre
In 1992, the OTTO ROTH company moved into a new logistics centre in
Stuttgart-Weilimdorf. The facility which covered an area of approx. 12,000m²
consisted of an automated pallet warehouse and a warehouse for small parts
designed as a tray warehouse. Goods-inwards and despatch areas and an
underground car park form the remainder of the building.
Due to expansion beyond the region and purchasing policies as well as
introduction of C-part management according to the Kanban principles there was
a need for a large amount of warehousing space. This meant that expansion of
the automatic warehouse, which was planned with the first building stage, could
be tackled.
Forward-looking technology
Together with the block warehouse, the logistics centre can offer space for
almost 30,000 trays and some 8,700 pallet spaces. Products which are sold
quickly are stored in the tray warehouse. The pallet stores are used for
scheduling large quantities, for products with a slower turnover and for
restocking the tray warehouse. Slow-moving and restock products are stored in
the block warehouse along with some long-term products.
Picking can be carried out from all warehouse areas simultaneously. Two-stage picking
means that the goods can be put together automatically. The whole system is
designed for round-the-clock operation.
